Titanium, brass, or steel — which material actually matters
Material is the first spec anyone quotes, and the one most likely to be oversold. Here's what actually changes.
Titanium
Light for its strength, doesn't corrode, and develops a matte patina rather than tarnishing. It's also the most expensive to machine, which is most of why titanium devices cost more — not because the metal itself performs dramatically better in the hand for most fidget use cases.
Brass
Heavy for its size, and it patinas visibly with skin contact — some people carry brass specifically to watch that happen. It's softer than steel or titanium, so edges round off with wear rather than staying sharp, which some carriers prefer.
Stainless steel
The middle ground: heavier than aluminum, harder-wearing than brass, cheaper to machine than titanium. Least likely to show wear patterns over time, which is a plus if you want a device that looks the same in year three as it did on day one.
Aluminum
Lightest common option, comes in anodized colours, and is the least expensive to produce. It dents more easily than the others and shows scratches faster.
Zinc alloy and "unspecified metal"
A lot of budget listings simply say "metal" or "alloy" without naming it. If a listing won't name the material, treat any weight or durability claim about it with extra scepticism.
The honest takeaway
None of these materials change how a bearing spins or how a click sounds — that's mechanism and machining tolerance, not material. Material mostly changes weight, patina behaviour, and price. Choose it for how you want the object to age, not for a performance claim.
